Local artist, “Michael” presents his debut exhibition, a series of acrylics on canvas and mixed media. He illustrates various concepts of form and texture found in the natural environment such as: an ammonite fossil bed, the primal aggression of an archeopteryx, mysterious desert vistas, the allure of a tropical sunset, and a crystal moon with sparkling crystal trees.

Tracks and traces can provide a glimpse into the lives of animals whose actions are otherwise hidden from us. They can tell us not only what the animal was and where it has been but possibly even what it was doing. Museum Educator Crystal Mason will teach children about these identification tools for desert animals during this informative Science Saturday.

Shop for Mother’s Day while you support the Hi-Desert Nature Museum!  Three local merchants – momTech, Mom’s Homemade Shipping and Kim’s Fabric Outlet – have organized an Arts & Crafts Show as a fundraiser for the museum.  The outdoor venue will be held at the three businesses at 57085 29 Palms Highway in Yucca Valley, across from Sizzler.  This fun-filled family event will include arts and crafts vendors, live music and dance, food, and kids’ activities.  Join us for the museum’s biggest fundraising event of the year!

momTech will be holding their grand opening during the Arts & Crafts Show and have generously donated an Xbox 360, Windows laptop computer and iPhone as door prizes.  For each vendor purchase made during the Arts & Crafts Show, guests will receive a free door prize ticket.  Proceeds will go to benefit the museum and its educational programs.

Barbara Harris will be giving a Powerpoint presentation sharing early folklore of Giant Rock, showing photos and providing documentation on Frank Critzer’s German spy controversy.  She’ll cover George Van Tassel’s UFO Spacecraft Conventions and tell interesting stories from behind the scenes with historic photographs.   Barbara will also give the latest information on the Marine Base acquisition in Johnson Valley and how it affects Giant Rock.  There will be a model and photos on display, a short Q&A and time for you to share your stories.  Please bring YOUR old photos, articles and memorabilia to share.

The Town of Yucca Valley will present the Yucca Valley High School Art Show, on display April 30 through May 30, 2013 at the Hi-Desert Nature Museum.  This annual exhibition highlights the finest work of some of this community’s rising talent from Yucca Valley High School.  The display consists of paintings and drawings covering a large variety of compelling subjects and artistic styles.  An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 3^rd, from 4:30-6:00 p.m., which is free to the public.

EARTH DAY CONSERVATION FAIR

The Hi-Desert Nature Museum’s much anticipated Earth Day Conservation Fair will feature live music, dancing, artists, and vendors in a family-oriented environment.  Nature organizations attending include Joshua Tree National Park, Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, Wildlands Conservancy, Morongo Basin Conservation Association, and many more.  Over twenty local artists will be displaying jewelry and artwork inspired by our desert environment.  A face painter and kids’ hands-on crafts will be available for younger visitors.
